December 2009

So Long, Farewell to 2009

December 31, 2009

It has been a crazy crazy year and I can say that I am really looking forward to 2010! Here is my 9 for 2009:

9. Finished my MBA

8. Went to Italy and got married

7. I hung out with my Mom for her 50th Birthday

6. We took 3 trips to Madison to see Mike’s Badgers play

5. We made our own wine at Bin 36 in Chicago

4. Saw the Gopher/Badger game in the brand new stadium

3. Thought about getting a Doctorate

2. Went to Rio for Thanksgiving

1. Quit a job I did not like

And because it was really hard to narrow it down to 9 a few other random things- I went to 4 new countries this year, visited 5 states for work/fun, flew close to 40,000 miles, we went to about 20 great restaurants and made countless dishes. It was a definitely a big growth year and I know 2010 is going to be even better.

Some of the things that we are planning on happening in 2010-

1) I will start a new job

2) We will sell Mike’s place

3) We will buy our first house together

4) There will be travel to somewhere fun, hopefully 2 trips

5) Mike will have more time at home

6) We will see the first major league outdoor baseball game in MN in 30 years

7) There will be more wine blending in Chicago

8) Bon Jovi will be glad to see us in Chicago in July ;) Not like he will even know we are there

9) I will continue my yoga, cardio and weight lifting routine

10.) Our kitchen will get lots of use with new dishes, more good wine drinking and even a homemade pasta experiment.

I put it in writing and will be curious to see how many of these come true, hopefully all of them!

The Last Day

December 31, 2009

The much anticipated last day is here and I have a lot of mixed emotions about it. While I may not have loved what I was doing for about the past year I did have some very close work friends that I am really going to miss. I have been working here for 5 years and have grown an incredible amount during that time, I have had 3 roles, started and completed my MBA, was involved in about 5 different volunteer committees and made some incredible friends.

Some of the things that I will not miss- the corporate politics, the extreme budget cuts that we have dealt with the past few years, and the lack of diversity in terms of thought and status. About 90% of this place is middle aged white men and while they are important there could have been a better effort to include other age groups, ethnic groups and even associates from different industries.

I have lunch with my work best friend today and I think I might cry saying goodbye, she and I have spent A LOT of time together and I will really miss her. While I know we will stay in touch it will not be quite the same as seeing each other everyday.

This weekend I am heading to Wisconsin to see my mom and other family and hopefully relax a bit before I start my new adventure on Monday. So much for taking some time off ;) Stay tuned for some recaps of the weekend and a post bright and early on Monday morning.

An early Christmas present to me is hosting the Blogger Secret Ingredient for Week 62! Thanks to Julie for passing the duties! Since I am sure we have all been eating A LOT of yummy treats I figured that a more savory ingredient would be fun. I am also extending this one more week- everyone was so busy with the holidays that I only got a few recipes.

Balsamic Vinegar

Balsamic Vinegar can be used for so many things- salad dressing, sauces, a glaze and the list goes on and on!

Hells Kitchen in Minneapolis

December 29, 2009

We knew we needed a very hearty breakfast to cure us from our very late night and Hells Kitchen was at the top of our list of places to try. Normally you MUST have reservations for the Sunday Gospel Brunch but since it was a holiday weekend it wasn’t quite as busy as it usually is. We only had to wait 15 minutes for a table for 3 (Pete had to work). We definitely had bigger eyes than our stomachs because we ordered way too much food but every bite was seriously amazing. We started with the (descriptions from their menu)

Caramel-Pecan Roll – A warm, melt-in-your-mouth 1/4 pound caramel cinnamon roll topped with roasted, salted pecans and a rich, homemade caramel sauce.

Toasted Sausage Bread – Yes we know, the name does
sound strange, but trust us, this is a deliciously dense bread made with
our own homemade bison sausage, toasted walnuts, black currants, black
love it enough to order an entire loaf to take home!

Mahnomin Porridge – Native-harvested, hand-parched wild rice from the
Leech Lake Band of Ojibway. Served warm with roasted hazelnuts, dried blueberries, sweetened cranberries, heavy cream and pure maple syrup.

For my main entree I tried something new, I know it is strange that I have never had corned beef hash before but I did really enjoy it. Corned Beef Hash – Hand pulled, house-cured corned beef brisket with sautéed banana fingerling potatoes, sweet onions and crisp celery. Served with 2 eggs, toast & side of fresh fruit.

We left Hells Kitchen stuffed to the max but it was one of the best breakfasts I have ever had! They have a cookbook that I am seriously thinking about going to get to add to my huge collection.

It has been months since I had a bowl of oatmeal and was really craving it on this very cold morning. I mixed 1/3 cup of Steel Cut Oats and 1 1/4 cups of water last night and let it sit overnight in the fridge. I microwaved when I got to work this morning and [...]

Missing Veggies

December 27, 2009

After a weekend of not eating enough fruits and veggies I knew a huge clean out the fridge salad was in order. One of those salads that a restaurant would charge about $12.95 for- lots of organic mixed greens, sunflower seeds, cucumbers, peppers, carrots, peapods, pear, blueberries, feta, and a Bumble Bee Tuna filet with Newman’s [...]
