Casual vs Formal

March 10, 2010

As we get ready to move I have been wondering if I should get a set of more “formal” dishes. I don’t want true China because I worry I would never use it but I do want something nicer for dinner parties, holidays and entertaining.

In my perfect life I am the uber hostess that has the beautiful table settings, but in real life… I just use my every day dishes and am lucky if I remember the placemats  ;) Someone at work suggested Craig’s List but it seems like Grandma China (no offense to any Grandma’s out there) all flowery and pink. Just not my style.

I came across this site recently and was just drooling over all the creativity and beautiful tables. Sigh. Maybe someday I will be the mini Martha that I have always wanted to be. I want my own show on Food Network to talk about cooking, organizing, travel, fitness and wine.

Any suggestions out there for a good place to buy dishes?

I was at Winners the other day and actually saw some really nice stuff!! I didn’t buy any :( but one day when I’m feeling like I have some extra cash I will!

See – I think it depends on how formal you want to be. I don’t think it is any fun to buy a bunch of formal dishes if you lose who you are. I know that sounds corny. But you are so FUN. :) I think you can get nice stuff – even Fiesta or something – it is fun and colorful but also doesn’t scream cheap. Just my two cents.

I like Cost Plus World Market for fun dishes, Asian plates, etc. Of course, my favorite is Crate and Barrel, but that isn’t alway cost efffective. ;-)

I have Fiesta for my dishes. I think I’ve seen that you have it too in some of your food shots! I find that it can be very formal. When I had Christmas Eve dinner, I only used my red and green place settings. It made a very festive and formal table. My co-worker that also has Fiesta suggested it. She does orange, yellow, and brown for Thanksgiving. I am going to try that when (and if) I ever get to host Thanksgiving dinner.

I think the formality is all about what you make it. If you find formal dishes that you love, then go for it. If not, then make the fiesta fit your style. I wasn’t registering for any bone china when I got married, it’s just not me!
