Last night Mike and I met up with my friend Ray from Grad School for a catch up dinner. Ray and I spent 2 and half long years in classes together and we always love to commiserate about the papers, the group projects and the pain we experienced
Red Stag has been on our list for almost a year and a half and we finally had an excuse to check it out!
We got there just in time for the tail end of happy hour and I enjoyed a $3 glass of their house wine that wasn’t that bad. I also had some sparking water since they have sparking and still on tap and you just flip your coaster to designate which one you would like.
For a starter we tried the cheese curds and smelt fries. Everyone that we had ever heard talk about Red Stag, talked about those smelt fries. They were pretty good but the three of us couldn’t finish the whole cone of them. But the cheese curds on the other hand were inhaled in about 2 minutes
Being the Wisconsin girl that I am, I can not leave amazing fried cheese on the table.
For our main courses Mike and I split a starter of duck confit that was so rich and delicious.
Mike had the Pan Roasted Duck with Sweet Potato Purée, Roasted Parsnips,
Pate Beignet
I ate about half of my plate of Beef Shortribs with English Pea Risotto, Parmesan

While Ray had the Grilled Lamb Leg with Braised Rapini, Curried Chickpeas,
Zattar Yogurt
We shared the candy plate for dessert that had 4 different home made selections, a brown sugar nougat, a brittle, 5 Spice Chocolate Chews and Red Wine Fruit Gele. The nougat was my favorite and so soft and chewy with just a hint of brown sugar.

We will be going back to Red Stag! We had amazing food and our waitress was great, she got our food out quickly and offered her suggestions on the items she loved.

Yum, Love the Red Stagg! You probably have already been there, but Anchor Fish & Chips in NE has the BEST fish fry! (Since we are on the topic of fried Wisco foods)

Funny, that Melissa hasn’t heard of cheese curds. I guess it’s totally a midwest thing. Looks like a fun dinner!
