Early Fathers Day

June 13, 2010

Today has been a pretty busy day, we got a great workout in at the gym, cleaned up the house, ran a few errands and made a steak house quality dinner for Mike’s dad for an early Fathers Day.

Jim always goes fishing for a week to a remote lake in Canada so we invited him over for a good steak dinner. We made a good mixed salad of spinach, arugula, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, nectarines and the leftover dressing from last night. The steaks were a good New York Strip from Kowalski’s Market at about $20 dollars a pound, these were steakhouse quality and I might even say better than what you might get out to eat for $60 dollars plus per steak. Mike grilled them for about 4 minutes a side and they were perfectly cooked. A little grilled asparagus on the side was the perfect accompaniment.

The wine choice was a The Loose Goose 2008 Pinot Noir from the San Antonio Valley in Chile. A nice light Pinot Noir with a beautiful plum color.

Dessert was the best part of the meal! Some chocolate that Cathy brought us from Belgium and let me just say that the whole box in my fridge is in danger of being consumed quickly. We also had Jim’s favorite fruit with angel food cake. Except ours had to be taken up a notch to be fruit in a balsamic glaze.

Ingredients:

Strawberries, Nectarines, Pluots

1/4 cup balsamic

1/4 cup sugar

Directions

Mix all together and let the flavors combine, serve in a bowl or over cake and ice cream.

We were heading to the Villa on Sunday, so were up around 9 to go pick up the rental car and get packd up. We left for the Villa around 10. Mark wanted to be there first one there to ensure every last detail was taken care of, the staff at Vigna Maggio did not disappoint. We toured the estate, scouted locations for the ceremony and got checked into our room. Later that afternoon we headed to relax for a bit at the pool, the views from the pool are unbelievable. It is lush green rolling hills, all the grapes and a few other villas scattered throughout.

We got a chance to see the wine cellar and their fermantation room, there is evidence that wine has been made there since 1492! Talk about amazing history.

The first night we had a big group dinner for 24 on the garden lawn, we had starters of mozzarella and tomatoes, prosciutto and salami. The first course with vegetable lasagna, and then we had a roast beef in a herb sauce. Dessert was similar to a strawberry and cream jelly cake. And of course there was wine, we had our own mini barrel for the group and just kept filling our table pitcher with that wine. The dessert wine was Vin Santo which is similar to Madeira. All of it was very good! We were up late talking, dancing and socializing with everyone.
