Travel Thursday: Hurghada Egypt

September 30, 2010

Last week our Egypt trip started in Cairo, and then we headed to Hurghada on the Red Sea for rest and relaxation. We flew from Cairo to Hurghada and headed to our inclusive resort, the Sheraton Soma Bay.

Map of Egypt

This was our first time staying at an all inclusive and it was a much needed few days of nothing! We didn’t leave the resort at all and just enjoyed sun, sand, snorkeling and the food.

We enjoyed snorkeling on a reef right off the dock, read a few books, and even got our traditional Thanksgiving.

Dusting Light Bulbs

September 29, 2010

Tonight was a full on cleaning of the house, top to bottom. My parents are coming this weekend and the house needs to be in perfect shape. There was dusting, laundry, bathroom cleaning, carpet cleaning, vacuuming, even dusting of light bulbs. The house is pretty much spotless :)

After 2+ hours of cleaning I was ready for a glass of wine, a lighter dinner and Glee (Brittney Spears, John Stamos and musical numbers- that is my idea of a great show!)

Everest on Grand

September 29, 2010

Last night I met my friend Adrianne for a catch-up dinner at Everest on Grand. Everest features cuisine from Nepal and Tibet, I was excited to try something new. It has been a few months since I have seen here and there was a lot to catch up- new jobs, upcoming trips and her upcoming wedding in India! It was really nice to have a girls night where we could just vent about work, share excitement over upcoming trips and talk about a great cause she is working on.

Adrianne’s sister Melissa has a painful condition with her teeth that causes infections and a compromised immune system and she is organizing a run and a charity to help raise money for Melissa to have her mouth fixed. A smile is such an important feature and when you have severe issues with your teeth and have lost a number of them you become very self conscious. If you are in Twin Cities area and want to take part in the run or learn more about Adrianne’s cause check out Run for a Smile

After checking out the menu I decided on Kaalo Chiya Tea which is Nepali Guranse – a first-flush Darjeeling-like leaf tea from Eastern Nepal. It was a bit spicy and reminded me of the Good Earth Sweet and Spicy Tea. For an appetizer I tried Momo, which are steamed dumplings with veggies and/or meat, they reminded me of potstickers and were delicious.

But the star of the evening were out dinners, Adrianne had the veggie Thukpa which was a noodle soup with garlic, spices and veggies and was the biggest bowl of soup I have ever seen. She has leftovers for lunch and dinner today.

I tried Yak, I figured when else would the option of three or four dishes with yak be present. I ordered the Yak Keema which had peas, and spices in a flavorful sauce that was served with rice and of course some garlic naan on the side.

The food was excellent, great flavors and it smells amazing about a block away. Check out Everest on Grand!

McCoy’s

September 28, 2010

Mike and I met up with our friend Mike at McCoy’s in St. Louis Park for a catch-up happy hour and dinner. Jen, Mike and their twins live on the other side of the metro from us and it is really hard to find a time that works for all us. I wish we could see them more than we do. Mike called to suggest a happy hour and dinner because Jen and the twins were out of town. If we can’t get the whole family we will at least take one ;)

We met up at McCoy’s for catch-up and good eats. I started with a Crispin Pear Cider and some Beer Pretzels which were warm, chewy and had a nice flavor from the caraway seeds and three dipping sauces. Yum!

I can never finish a restaurant meal so Mike and I opted to share the Walleye Basket with Pesto Aioli, cole slaw and a few fries. I could barely even finish my half! It was a pretty impressive fish basket, not soggy and the cole slaw reminded me of a fish fry in Wisconsin.
