Wine Wednesday: Pinot Grigio

March 16, 2011

Pinot Grigio, which is made from Pinot Gris, tends to get bad reviews. Some wine drinkers think it is “boring” or “simple” but it is one of the few white wines that I really like! It is light, has really nice citrus notes and pairs well with seafood, pasta, chicken. Pinot Grigio is a wine that should be enjoyed within 2 years of the vintage. It is grown in the northern region of Italy, Lombardi and Friuli are the most common areas.

Most Italian wines are not aged in oak so they have a much more crisp taste and have strong notes of fruit and spice instead of oak. I opened a Vina Baccana Pinot Grigio from the Friuli region and paired it with with the Lemon Roasted Chicken. This is from the Wall Street Journal Wine Club and retails for about $15 a bottle. The acidity of the Pinot Grigio matched well with the lemon. I love a good Pinot Grigio and have a few more bottles of this to enjoy later.

Try a Pinot Grigio instead of a chardonnay next time you are looking for a lighter white. With warmer weather coming this is going on my list of favorite whites.
