Vertical Endeavors

March 17, 2011

Even though I am supposed to be taking it easy after some medical tests this week I had to get out and do at least a little activity and have a little fun. Enter Vertical Endeavors in St. Paul, an indoor rock climbing facility.

My first though was what is Vertical Endeavors? Vertical Endeavors is one of the largest indoor rock climbing facilities in the world. With over 18,200 square feet of climbing surface, Vertical Endeavors is the place to climb! Over 60 separate ropes and 15 Auto Belays provide hundreds of climbing routes. An excellent beginner area is perfect for introducing new climbers to the sport.

I had never been climbing before and was a bit nervous, but a quick introduction and two strong carabiner clips and I was ready to start climbing. Wow it is a good workout! It takes lots of arm strength and both my arms and hands were pretty tired by the end.

By the end of the hour and a half I was there I felt like I got a pretty good workout. Estimates of calories burned in an hour of rock climbing are 400-800! That is a lot of calories. I certainly had a good sweat worked up :) Will I go again? Yes.  It was a lot of fun and I would love to learn how to use the ropes and belay with a partner. Although next time I won’t have recently manicured nails ;)  They are in need of being painted again. Just a little sacrifice for fitness and fun.

  1. Good for you! I’ve never rock climbed before. I really don’t have any desire to do it but I guess I would if someone asked me to try it with them or something like that. :)
