Wine Wednesday- Barolo

April 6, 2011

Since I do have a strong love of Italian wines I was all about trying a 2001 Barolo. I enjoyed a glass and loved the flavors but realized I didn’t know much about the varietal. So what is Barolo? It is produced from the Nebbiolo grape in the Piedmont region of Italy.

Nebbiolo sound familiar? It was last weeks Wine Wednesday. Random! I didn’t even realize they were the same grape. Barolo is the region in Piedmont where the grapes are grown. Barolo tends to be very heavy, with strong flavors of chocolate, tobacco, dried fruit and even leather.

If paired with food, Barolo needs a strong meal to balance it. Roasts, risotto, pasta with cream sauce but would probably not pair that well with Seafood. I tried a 2001 Carino Barolo. I really enjoyed my glass but at $50+ a bottle I will lean towards a good Nebiollo when I am looking for a really good glass of red. I am really glad that I got to try such a unique wine!
