Door County is a popular vacation spot in Wisconsin, right on Lake Michigan with quant little towns with dinners, shops and wineries. With a week off and some time to spend with my Mom I figured a day trip up to Door County was in order.
Thankfully we picked the right day, it was sunny but cool. We stopped at three different wineries to try the different varieties. Door County is known for their fruit wines, including cranberry and cherry but they starting to experiment with local grapes and bringing juice in from California and New York.
We visited-
Door County is an easy drive from anywhere in Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Illinois and would make for a great summer trip. You stay at a Bed and Breakfast, enjoy good food and make a day trip visiting all the wineries in the area. Is it the best wine you will every taste? Nope. But it is a great weekend getaway for those in the Midwest.
We did end up buying a bottle of Cranberry Apple Wine, Viognier and a Port. All of which were very drinkable and under $15 a bottle.
Simon Creek was my favorite, they had really unique wines with a really good Viognier and a port made with local grapes.
Even on a cold day the water was beautiful and blue:
