Wine Wednesday- Sauvignon Blanc

April 27, 2011

Yeah for Wine Wednesday! I just might get to enjoy some tonight at a work dinner in Dallas (I know traveling on my first week!). While it is a well known fact that I am not a white wine lover I have found a few varieties that I really enjoy. Especially on a nice warm summer day sitting on a patio.

Sauvignon Blanc is very crisp, light and often has hints of grassiness or tropical fruit. It best pairs with cheese (especially goat cheese), fish, chicken, or even sushi. Winemakers do not typically age Sauvignon Blanc so I have enjoyed a 2010 already. It is made from a green skinned grape and it is usually grown in France, Chile, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and even Brazil. New Zealand tends to produce my favorite and has the strongest hints of grassiness, tropical fruit and is very crisp.

My most recent bottle of Sauvignon Blanc was a 2010 Kono from the Marlborough region of New Zealand that had a screw top (this was one of the first kinds of wine to feature a screw top). There are some really delicious options under $12 a bottle.

A few others to check out:

Kim Crawford

Jackson Estate

Eradus (Over $12 but really good!)

An interesting piece from the New York Times about how New Zealand really impacted Sauvignon Blanc.

I love a good NZ Sauv Blanc. I started drinking them back in 2002 when I didn’t like red wine. Now, I enjoy a glass on a hot summer day. They are so refreshing and unique.
