Since I am working on trying to like white wine more, I have purchased a few more bottles to try. The Loon is a 2009 Riesling from the Clare Valley in Australia. This was one of my wines from the Wall Street Journal Wine Club and was a pretty good Riesling.
Riesling originated in the Rhine Region of Germany and is often semi-sweet to sweet, very dry and have a high acidity. Riesling’s vary greatly depending on where they are grown. Produced in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, U.S ., South Africa, Chile, the Alsace region of France and even China!
Riesling is usually enjoyed young, there are 2010’s already being enjoyed. The flavors are often apples, grapefruit, peach, with notable hints of green and floral. You can pick up a very drinkable bottle of Riesling for $8-$15 dollars. It is a great variety to introduce new wine drinkers to.
Like every wine, trying different brands and price will help determine likes and dislikes. Maybe your taste buds prefer something semi sweet instead of very sweet. Price is not always an indicator of quality! Plan a tasting with a few brands and price points of a certain kind of wine, you might be surprised with what you like.
