Pack or Buy

June 14, 2011

Even when I have almost no food in the house I still manage to pack at least half of my food for the day. Since I haven’t been grocery shopping in a week and a half my selections were limited but I did find enough for a full breakfast and most of my lunch minus the main course. I like packing a lunch and taking a few minutes to eat at my desk, I have more variety and get more fresh fruits and vegetables in. Packing a lunch saves a bucket load of money too, spending $5-10 dollars a day adds up very quickly. I would rather spend that on fun food choices at home.

Since my food choices at home were limited I grabbed veggies and hummus, an apple, a Diet Dr Pepper and a pineapple Soy Joy bar I was sent to review (this is my new favorite flavor). I knew I needed more than just that so I ran over to Jimmy John’s and grabbed a turkey unwich, no mayo extra veggies. With only four options within walking distance from work my selections are limited, I wanted something quick and easy and Jimmy John’s was that. The unwich is a bit messy and I always end up with food all over me and my desk but for $5.99 it was worth it.

Do you pack or buy your lunch if you work in an office?

Lake Avenue Cafe

June 14, 2011

First stop on our foodie weekend? Lake Avenue Café. It was a recommendation from a coworker and the owner at the B&B we were staying at and it did not disappoint. Lake Avenue focuses on local food and unique drinks right off of Canal Park in downtown Duluth.

Even though we were still pretty full from breakfast it was hard to resist all the delicious choices on the menu. We decided on splitting a sandwich and an entrée, the pulled bison cuban and the falafal platter. Both were amazing but I give the award to the bison cuban. Smokey, cheesy goodness on fresh bread with even better fries. We were in food heaven!

My cocktail made lunch even better; vodka, lychee liquor, crème de violet and lemonade. I need to figure out where I can get lychee liquor and crème de violet so I can recreate this drink. It might have been the prettiest drink I have ever had. A very light lavender color.

The price were a bit high for Duluth but it was so worth it. The service was spot on and we really enjoyed the atmosphere of the café. Quaint and bright with lots of unique art to look at.
