A few years ago I was at the grocery store and an older woman was walking up to the butcher and asked if he carried prosciutto. The butcher asked her how thick she needed it sliced and she replied- I am going to be wrapping it around melon. Without missing a beat he came back with- I can think of better things to wrap that around. He really didn’t mean it they way it came out but I burst out laughing, everyone looked at me as I turned bright red with embarrassment. Come on, please tell me someone else finds that just has funny/dirty as I do ![]()
Now every singe time I have prosciutto I think of the exchange between a lady and her butcher. So what did I do last night. I made a prosciutto and melon salad. I didn’t wrap it though. That would be dirty too much work.
Ingredients (inspired by Everyday Food)
1/2 a cantaloupe, diced
1/2 pound of bocconcini, little fresh mozzarella balls
1 package of prosciutto
1/4 cup fresh basil, torn
2 tbsp olive oil
Pinch of red pepper flakes
Salt/Pepper
Directions
Place prosciutto on the edge of a large platter.
In a large bowl combine cantaloupe, bocconcini, torn basil, olive oil, red pepper flakes, salt/pepper
Pour salad in the center of the prosciutto and chill for 15 minutes. Serve.
Try to eat this without seeing the butcher say I can think of something better to wrap that around. Seriously! 5+ years later it still makes me laugh. Apparently I am 5, but that is already well document with my love of Blue Moon Ice Cream.

Totally made me laugh too, Melissa. That is funny stuff. I’ve never combined melon in this type of salad, but a friend of mine was just mentioning it yesterday. Apparently, I’m missing out on a great thing. Yours looks great.
I totally was on the same wave-length!
LOL!
Yum! Simple, fresh and delicious!
I knew you would laugh at that story!
