Fitness Friday: Making Time

February 10, 2012

I just don’t have time to go to the gym. I am just way too busy. I have too much going on during the evenings to go. These are just a few of the excuses I hear about why people don’t make time to workout. I know that everyone is incredibly busy but there is always time to workout and be healthy.

My schedule during the week is busy too, between work (right now its about 40 hours a week of job hunting), blogging, activities, and time with Scott and the dogs. It could be really easy to say that I just don’t have the time to workout. But fitness is a part of who I am and I choose to make myself and the time I spend working out a priority.

Tips for Making Time:

  • I workout in the morning. It is the most predictable part of my day. Yes that means that I go to bed earlier and sometimes that 5:30 alarm that goes off a few times during the week makes me want to throw something but I remember how good I feel after a workout.

  • Plan. I say this about healthy eating too; if I don’t plan I fail. I take time to prep food for the week why wouldn’t I do the same for workouts. The night before I am heading to the gym in the morning I have my bag packed and ready to go by the door.

  • Organize. Since I shower at the gym in the morning during the week I make sure that I have my makeup bag, toiletries, clothes and jewelry neatly organized. This organizer from Thirty One has been the best thing for my gym bag. I get shampoo, conditioner, facewash, shower gel, a razor, lotion, and hair products in one bag and it is filled with what I need. I use reusable bottles to refill to save money on buying those small products and I use full size haircare products and buy 2 when they are on sale.  One for the home bathroom and one for the gymbag.

  • Reward. I like at the gym like a reward to myself. It is time alone, to listen to my favorite music, get a good sweat in and flip through a magazine during cardio. I am not reading every single word on each page but it does make the time go much faster and then I donate the magazine to the gym for someone else to read.

  • Going in the morning can save a lot of time if you commute at all and have to deal with traffic. When I was working I would drive to the gym just a few miles from work to help avoid traffic, this was a win win situation. I got my workout in and I avoided sitting on a highway barely moving. As I am interviewing for my next job I think about the office location and where the nearest location of my gym is to that office. Working out is that important to me that I actually make sure any job that I may take is reasonably near a gym.
