Fitness Friday: Back to Yoga

May 18, 2012

I have been doing yoga for the past 3 years and have noticed that I tend to have an ebb and flow to my practice, I am very devoted for a few months and then start a new weight program or get re-energized by the gym. But mid-May to mid-June is my back to yoga month. I had a Groupon for CorePower and it has been fantastic. Very much needed during an insanely busy time with moving, wedding planning, having 3 weeks of travel in a 5 week period, and just living life. This yoga focus came at the perfect time in my life!

The cost of yoga is really frustrating for me, at $15 to $20 a class unless you have a monthly membership it feels frivolous but then I think about my health and realize would I rather spend that money on doing something great for my mind and body or spend it on junk food or something not as healthy. IT is hard to disagree with doing it for my health. I am seriously considering joining CorePower and committing to going 3 times a week.

The Goal:

  • 10 Classes in 30 Days, I know this doesn’t seem like a lot but I was gone the first few days of May and this entire week until last night. This really means dedicating myself to finding the time to go to class. I am well on my way to this since I have already 5 classes in. 5 more is achievable!
  • Try at least 1 new class during this 30 days. Done! I tried a Hot Yoga Fusion which mixes traditional hot yoga with a vinyasa flow style. Really hard class, I left drenched in sweat and feeling very grounded.
  • Achieve a new posture. Currently working towards a more solid headstand and maybe getting through the full expression of toe stand

My Yoga Must Haves:

Yogitoes Skidless Yoga Towel

Sunburst Skidless®

This makes such a difference in hot yoga with sliding around the mat. They are expensive but they did just have 50% off and it was a great time to buy a new one. The two I have are looking  a little ragged after 2+ years.

Gaiam Everything Fits Bag

Perfect for yoga, a space for my mat, towels, water bottle and keys. Love this bag!

Sanuk Flip Flops

Comfy sandals made from yoga mats and perfect for walking to and from yoga. And walking the dogs in the morning too Winking smile

On my wish list, a new yoga mat. I have had the same one for 4 years and it is looking a bit worn. But it is orange and it makes me happy! I will keep a lookout for mats on sale.

I’m one of those who won’t do yoga just because the class is so expensive. I’ll stick with biking, jogging, swimming (in the lakes), and gardening for exercise.

Isn’t the hot fusion class great? One of my favorites!
I’ve been disappointed because the Corepower studios out here don’t have the traditional hot bikram classes. :(

I would be so sad to not have the traditional hot class, I love it.
