Wine Wednesday Casa Alta Piedra Malbec Merlot

August 1, 2012

This was a Wall Street Journal Wine Club pick, this was from our last case and I have our membership on hold since we have close to 50 bottles right now and may end up with some leftover from the wedding. Scott has put me on a wine buying moratorium Winking smile Now, that doesn’t mean we aren’t drinking it! We just don’t have any more room for bottles. That won’t last long.

The Casa Alta Piedra Malbec Merlot was pretty good, a bit young but with strong notes of berry and spice. Very smooth and the blend of malbec and merlot isn’t something I have seen a lot of. Retail for around $15 a bottle, it feels like a good everyday wine. Probably not special occasion but good for a party with many different palates.

How did you learn how to talk about wine? I feel like I’ve slowly been learning more about it but am totally lost when it comes to describing it…

It helped to go to tastings where I learned about the grapes and the regions. I started to understand that Merlot from California would taste like xyz and then I tried more wines from that region to see how the tastes varied.
