Tips for Pairing Red Wine with Food

Wine and food pairing are difficult for those of us who are just beginning to learn about wines. I must admit that I did not drink wine in my youth; however, as I have matured and my pallet has changed I find that I enjoy a good bottle of wine with my meals. Choosing a wine to accompany your meal is a matter of individual taste; however, there are a few food pairings that you should avoid with each wine because the food will actually damage the taste of the wine. For example, fish and goat cheese should never be paired with a red wine and red meat tends to alter the taste of white wines. I have learned a few tips along the way (through trial & error as well as a little research) about how to pair red wine with food.

When planning a meal, remember that wine is like the rest of your meal – – you drink lighter wines at the beginning of your meal and progress to heavier wines at the end. For this reason, red wines are typically not paired with appetizers. You may use a red wine with cheese as an appetizer; however, you will want to choose cheeses that are stronger in flavor such as Feta, Muenster or Roquefort. Keep the red wine to something lighter such as a Beaujolais or Zinfandel. This will keep your guests from becoming overwhelmed by a heavy wine before the main course is served. read more

Eco-friendly and Healthy Classroom Party Ideas

When my kids were in elementary school, I attended many classroom parties. Being an eco-friendly person, I was always shocked to see how much trash was generated at the end of the day. When my child's second grade teacher asked me to help coordinate the spring classroom party, I took it upon myself to research what it would take to make this a GREEN classroom party! It was easy to do…the kids learned about being eco-friendly, the teacher was happy not to have all that trash, and you should have seen how surprised the custodian was!

Not only did we figure out ways to reduce the amount of trash generated, but we also provided some healthy and locally-grown foods for the kids to eat. And, instead of sending home 25 pieces of paper so that families could sign up to bring something, we used free online signup sheets. read more

Pediatric Dentists in Tampa, Florida

Universally, for the most part, adults of all ages do not one like going to the dentist. No one really does. Children especially are oftentimes frightened by the mere word of dentist, let alone going to see one. What if children could go to a dentist that turns out to be a fun adventure and rewarding experience for them? It’s not as far-fetched as you think. There are now dentists who cater to children in helping them overcome their fears. You’ll find offices featuring toys, videos, and other fun features.

The dentist I went to many years ago also specialized in pediatrics. A portion of his office was set-up with many bright colors, lively decorations, and other childlike settings. If you didn’t know better you wouldn’t believe you were in a dentist office. Right here in Tampa there are four outstanding children’s dentists who are devoted to making your child feel special and cared for. read more

How to Avoid Wasting Food and Save on Your Grocery Bill

Government reports and attention in the media consistently point to the growing issue of obesity in America. We are well aware of recommendations that encourage us to spend a good portion of our food budget in the produce department. Many of us avoid buying too many fresh vegetables and fruits because they spoil too fast and frequent visits to the grocery store can cut into valuable time and cause overspending.

In an effort to make healthier choices for my family, I found myself buying way more produce than I could use before it would spoil. I had good intentions of using every item in my cart, but very often by the time I would reach for that fresh tomato, it already had mold on it. As I emptied the produce bins in my refrigerator I felt sickened by the amount of waste that occurred due to overbuying and nonuse. read more
